Frequently Asked Questions
Why does a 20% hike feel like less in hand?
Because a portion of the hike moves you into a higher tax slab, and PF contributions (both yours and employer's) increase proportionally with basic salary. A โน20,000/month hike may only yield โน12,000โ14,000 extra in hand after tax and PF. This is normal โ it's called the marginal tax effect.
New regime or old regime โ which is better after a raise?
The new regime is generally better if your deductions (80C + HRA + 80D etc.) are less than โน3.75 lakh/year. The old regime is better if you have a home loan, significant 80C investments, and HRA. At higher salaries (above โน15L), the regimes often converge โ use a detailed comparison with your actual deductions.
What is a good salary hike in India?
With inflation at 5โ6%, a raise below 6% is effectively a pay cut in real terms. Most IT companies in India offer 8โ12% for average performers, 15โ20% for top performers. Switching jobs typically yields 20โ40% increases. If your hike is below inflation, start exploring options.
How do I negotiate a better hike?
Come with market data (Glassdoor, LinkedIn, AmbitionBox for Indian salaries), document your specific contributions in numbers, and time the conversation after a visible win. Asking for 20โ30% above what you expect leaves room to negotiate. Offers from other companies are the strongest negotiating leverage.
